How to get here

By Car

There are two possible ways to travel to Daylesford from Melbourne.

  • The first option is to take the Calder Highway
1 hr 30 min (121.9 km) via Calder Freeway (M79)
  • The second option is to take the Western Highway
1 hr 29 min (131.9 km) via National Highway (M8)

Driving directions from Melbourne:

From Melbourne CBD drive over the Westgate Bridge and turn onto the Western Ring Road, then take the Ballarat exit which will take you on the Western Highway.  Travel for about one hour until the Ballan/Daylesford turnoff.  After taking this left exit turn right, this will take you all the way to Daylesford.

From Melbourne Airport:

Take the Calder Highway to the township of Woodend. Drive through the main street of Woodend, and then turn left and follow the signs to Daylesford.

Once in Daylesford, follow the signs that direct you to the Convent Gallery.

By Public Transport

Victoria’s country rail operator, V/Line, operates several services daily to Daylesford, via train to Woodend, Ballarat or Castlemaine, with a connecting coach service to Daylesford.

The bus will stop in Bridport Street, 1km from The Convent. It is a 15 min walk to The Convent.

Use this helpful tool to plan your trip –

The fastest route is to catch a train from Southern Cross Station to Woodend Station and then a bus from Woodend Station to Daylesford. Total journey time: 1h 54min (include 1 change).

There are also more frequent trains to Ballan, however you will need to get a taxi from Ballan to Daylesford (approximate 25 min drive).

The Convent is on the crest of Wombat Hill and the Convent experience is spread over four floors. As daunting as this may sound, the historic building does have special access points to ensure that visitors who have trouble walking uphill and/or negotiating stairs can still access most parts of the Convent.

Following the wheelchair signs when at the corner of Hill and Daly Streets will take you to the Altar Bar/Function carpark. There is a wheelchair access point on the west-side of the building, to the left of the chapel.

This entry point give you access to the café, gift shop and lower gallery.  From this level, you can also access a lift which will take you to the function rooms, chapel and upper galleries.

If you have any questions regarding access, please call the gallery on 03 5348 3211 and one of our friendly team will assist you.
