Leon Pericles
Born in Perth, 1949, Leon Pericles began painting and drawing at an early age. After an extensive art education in Australia, Pericles completed his post-graduate studies in the U.K. and travelled throughout Europe and America before returning to Western Australia where he currently lives and works.
Painter, printmaker, sculptor, designer and kite-maker, Pericles’ prolific artistic production has brought him wide national and international acclaim. He has staged many solo exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas and his work is held in numerous major public and private collections all over the world. In 1989 the Western Australian State Art Gallery gave him the great honor of curating a retrospective exhibition of his prints entitled 20 years of printmaking.
Leon Pericles’ great love of outback Australia shows clearly in his work. His art has been described as “distilling the essence of the bush, all imbued with the whimsy and enchantment which are his trademark.” His witty and unique views of Australia, combined with his outstanding talent have earnied him the reputation of being on of Australia’s most prominent artists.
